We will talk about how to alter a WordPress URL that is greyed out in this blog post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chances are, some code was added to the wp-config file or your theme&#8217;s functions file at some point, either by your developer or web hosting provider for what ever reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/chkserv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/general-settings-site-url-1024x430.png\" alt=\"general-settings-site-url\" style=\"aspect-ratio:2.380952380952381;width:800px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To check and edit this, you will need FTP client ( <a href=\"https:\/\/filezilla-project.org\/download.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">FileZilla<\/a> ) or if you&#8217;re using cPanel, login to that and go to <em>File Manager<\/em>. Most common place is in the <strong><em>wp-config<\/em><\/strong> file, so lets check that first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. The wp-config.php file<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open the file <em><strong>wp-config.php<\/strong><\/em> and find these lines, only one may be present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted has-white-color has-black-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-1\"><code readonly=\"true\"><br>define( 'WP_HOME', 'https:\/\/example.com' );<br>define( 'WP_SITEURL', 'https:\/\/example.com' );<br><\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once removed the line(s) and saved the wp-config file, then it should fix your issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then navigate back to your General Settings page in your WordPress admin area and check that the URL fields, It should now be editable. Then set your new URL in General Settings, and save page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lines not in wp-config? Then follow stage 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. The theme&#8217;s functions.php file<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Via FTP or File Manager, please follow the path below and open <em><strong>functions.php<\/strong> file<\/em>, go to <br><strong><em>\/wp-content\/themes\/your-active-theme-folder\/<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next, you need to check if the following lines is present, normally at the end of the file:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted has-white-color has-black-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-2\"><code readonly=\"true\">update_option( 'siteurl', 'https:\/\/example.com' );<\/code><br><code readonly=\"true\">update_option( 'home', 'https:\/\/example.com' );<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If they are present, simply remove the lines and save your functions.php file.
